X-ray eye in airports
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7687126.stm
Europe delays airport X-ray eye
x-ray body scanner
EU lawmakers have delayed the introduction at airports of full body scanners, machines that generate images of passengers - minus their clothes.
MEPs voted for a further study on the implications for privacy and health.
Computer pictures generated by the scanners give an outline of passengers' bodies beneath their clothes.
Supporters say they detect hidden objects not picked up by traditional metal detectors. But critics say they amount to a virtual strip search.
The new scanners have already been introduced in several US airports and have been tested around the world.
Efficient measure
The European Commission - which supports their implementation - has given assurances that the scanners will not be used routinely on all passengers.
And it would be a faster and less intrusive alternative to frisking or strip-searching people.
Where scanners are in use, security staff can pick out individuals to stand in a booth while three pictures are taken of the person in slightly different positions.
Within seconds, a scanner produces an image of the body.
What shows up is the naked human form and anything that may be concealed, such as a gun or drugs.
"The Commission believes that body scanning methods can complement in a very effective and efficient way the existing security measures at airports," said spokesman Jens Mester at EU headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.
But others are unconvinced.
"It is unacceptable, if scanners are used, these are machines that see you completely naked," said Martin Schulz, leader of the socialist grouping in the EU assembly.
"This is an offence against human dignity," he added.

Cerne Abbas Giant, Dorset, UK
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/dorset/7465329.stm
A shortage of sheep has led to a famous landmark in Dorset disappearing under vegetation and moss.
The 180ft (54.8m) famous fertility symbol Cerne Abbas Giant was also left struggling under plant life encouraged by a wet start to the summer.
A flock of 100 sheep is usually lent to the National Trust for a few weeks in May to graze on the land.
But a shortage has forced the trust to re-chalk the etching. It is hoped a flock will be on the hillside soon.
The first record of the giant, also referred to as the Rude Man, dates back to 1694 and he is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Many believe the figure is a symbol of ancient spirituality and fertility and he has been used to advertise products as diverse as condoms, jeans and bicycles.
During WWII, the giant was disguised to prevent the Germans using him as an aerial landmark.

Degree Confluence Project
http://www.confluence.org/
The goal of the project is to visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location. The pictures, and stories about the visits, will then be posted here.
The project is an organized sampling of the world. There is a confluence within 49 miles (79 km) of you if you're on the surface of Earth. We've discounted confluences in the oceans and some near the poles, but there are still 11,037 to be found.

Iranian-Americans traveling to Iran
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1142.html
Dual nationals must enter and depart the United States on U.S. passports.
U.S. citizens who were born in Iran, who have become naturalized citizens of Iran, or who were at one time citizens of Iran, and the children of such persons, are considered Iranian nationals by Iranian authorities. Therefore, despite the fact that these individuals possess U.S. citizenship, they must enter and exit Iran bearing an Iranian passport. Exit visas are required for dual nationals to depart Iran.
U.S. passports are valid for travel to Iran. However, U.S.-Iranian dual nationals have in the past been denied permission to enter/depart Iran documented as U.S. citizens and have had their U.S. passports confiscated upon arrival, unless they have renounced their Iranian citizenship. Nevertheless, in recent years the Iranian Government has become more lenient with dual nationals and rarely confiscates U.S. passports of U.S. – Iranian dual nationals. As a precaution, however, it is advisable for U.S.-Iranian dual nationals to obtain in their Iranian passports the necessary visas for the country that they will transit upon their return to the U.S. so that, if their U.S. passports are confiscated, they may apply for a new U.S. passport in that country.
Alternately, dual nationals whose U.S. passports are confiscated may obtain a “Confirmation of Nationality” from the U.S. Interests Section of the Embassy of Switzerland, which is the U.S. protecting power. This statement, addressed to the relevant foreign embassies in Tehran, enables the travelers to apply for third-country visas in Tehran.

Doomsday Clock
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6270871.stm
Experts assessing the dangers posed to civilisation have added climate change to the prospect of nuclear annihilation as the greatest threats to humankind.
As a result, the group has moved the minute hand on its famous "Doomsday Clock" two minutes closer to midnight.
The concept timepiece, devised by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, now stands at five minutes to the hour.
The clock was first featured by the magazine 60 years ago, shortly after the US dropped its A-bombs on Japan.
Not since the darkest days of the Cold War has the Bulletin, which covers global security issues, felt the need to place the minute hand so close to midnight.

Gorgeous Hot Springs in Turkey
Pamukkale is located in the Inner Aegean region at a distance of 20 km from the town of Denizli.
The tectonic movements that took place in the fault depression of the Menderes river basin gave rise to the emergence of a number of very hot springs, and it is the water from one of these springs, with its large mineral content, chalk in particular, that has created the natural wonder now known as Pamukkale, Cotton Fortress or Baumwollenschloss ...

Hand-Luggage & Liquids
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/5385376.stm
Air passengers travelling from European Union countries:
The European Commission has proposed limiting liquids to 100ml containers which must fit into a transparent, re-sealable plastic bag.
Larger sized liquids can be bought the other side of security.
But the DfT said liquids would still not be allowed on US-bound flights from the UK even if purchased "airside".
The rules would limit the size of carry-on bags to a maximum of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22in x 17.75in x 9.85in approx), which is the same as presently in the UK.

2. Reserver online or by phone 24/7
3. Pick it up and go (gas and insurance are included)
When you join, you'll get an electronic key that opens any car you reserve.
Once you're done, just return the car to its original location.
Cost
Owning a car costs money—around $500 a month when you add insurance, gas, maintenance, and parking to the monthly payment.
By comparison, the average City CarShare member pays about $35 a month for the same freedom.
Membership dues are just $10/month; then it's only $4/hour and 44¢/mile for most cars in our fleet—gas and insurance included. To join, there's an application fee of $30 and a security deposit of $300 that is fully refundable.

Grand Canyon Skywalk
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/08/0826_050826_grandcanyon.html
August 26, 2005—Fear of heights? This is definitely no place for you.
The all-glass skywalk will extend over the edge of the Grand Canyon, 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) above the Colorado River.
The Skywalk is scheduled to open to the public in January 2006 as part of a new resort on the reservation. The resort, known as Grand Canyon West, is to include a re-created Indian village and a restaurant perched on the edge of the canyon. Tourism is the reservation's biggest source of income.
Grand Canyon West will be on the western edge of Grand Canyon National Park, about 120 miles (about 200 kilometers) from Las Vegas. But perhaps not even the Las Vegas Strip's over-the-top attractions will be a match for this glass-bottom walkway over the world's biggest gorge.

Paris on a budget
PARIS, France (AP) -- The perfect Paris picnic comes cheap: a crusty baguette ($1), a thick slab of Camembert ($2.50), a modest Bordeaux ($5). Take it to the sprawling park at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, spread a blanket and dine with a view that is priceless.
