Homeless World Cup

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/5381454.stm

Homeless footballers from 48 countries around the world are centre stage in South Africa this week as they battle it out for the fourth annual Homeless World Cup in Cape Town.

The five-a-side games on an outdoor rubber surface last 14 minutes. The week-long tournament takes place at the Grand Parade in Cape Town with the final taking place on Saturday.

None of the players have their own homes, and many have been or are drug addicts, alcoholics or orphans. Many find their lives are changed simply by taking part.

Some 500 participants from nations including Afghanistan, Australia and the United States are taking part. In this match Paraguay take on Spain.

What Materazzi Said to Zidane

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internationals/5315618.stm

09/05/06

Materazzi told Gazzetta dello Sport: "I was tugging his shirt, he said to me 'if you want my shirt so much I'll give it to you afterwards,' I answered that I'd prefer his sister."

Full Story

Latest News

Materazzi has denied calling Zidane a "terrorist" or insulting his mother.

"I didn't call Zidane a terrorist and certainly didn't mention his mother."

But Materazzi added: "I am ignorant, I don't even know what an Islamic terrorist is; my only terrorist is her," he said pointing to his 10-month-old daughter.

"I did not bring up Zidane's mother; for me a mother is sacred."

BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.

She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.

The BBC's Ten O'Clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:

Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".

He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".

Zidane's agent, Alain Migliaccio, has hinted that Zidane will soon reveal exactly what was said by Materazzi.

Full Story

Zinedine Zidane's agent says the France captain headbutted Marco Materazzi in Sunday's World Cup final because the Italian made a "very serious" comment.

Sources in France say it is believed Materazzi insulted Zidane's family.

Materazzi himself has not spoken publicly about the incident except to deny a claim by Paris-based anti-racism group SOS Racism, made on Monday, that he had called Zidane "a dirty terrorist".

"It is absolutely not true, I did not call him a terrorist. I'm ignorant. I don't even know what the word means," the Italian news agency Ansa quoted Materazzi as saying after the Italian team returned to Rome.

Soccer Fans in Underpants

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/5096198.stm

Up to 1,000 Dutch fans watched their side play Ivory Coast in their underpants on Friday after they were denied entry to Stuttgart's stadium for wearing orange trousers with the name of a Dutch brewery which was not an official sponsor.

Faced with missing the game or ditching their orange lederhosen - given away by the brewery - they made the obvious choice.

Fifa officials said the trousers were an attempt at so-called ambush marketing - where a company tries to gain free publicity - and that they had to act to protect the interests of sponsors.

The Fan Camp in Dortmund is offering budget travellers a handy and relatively cheap (30 euro/night) place to lay their heads.

The Westfalenhallen complex - more usually known as a trade fair centre - has been transformed with the addition of bunk beds to sleep 3,952 people, 2,500 lockers, an internet cafe and 120 showers.

Big screens have been put up in two halls so fans can watch the games - including those played just 300m away in Dortmund's Westfalenstadion - before whiling the night away at the on-site disco.

Despite having more than a century of strikes to his name, Daei retains a hunger for more. KNOWN FACTS
- Top 8 teams as determined by FIFA would be placed as the heads of Groups A through H.
Remaining teams will be placed in pots 2 through 4.
- Germany will be the head of Group A. The remaining group headers will be determined on December 6th.
- Although 14 European countries have been qualified for the world cup, no more than 2 will be placed in the same group.
- According to FIFA, with the exception of Europe, wherever possible, no two teams from the same continental zone can be drawn in the same group.

IRAN's POTENTIAL COMPETITION IN THE GROUP STAGE!
Below, we will look at the statistical possibilities for Iran's group stage opponents.

Possibility of Iran would group with 2 European Teams?
There is a 75% chance for this to happen. Six of the groups will likely have 2 European teams.

Possibility of Iran would group with Brazil or Argentina?
There is a 25% possibility that Iran would end of with either of these two great teams as two out of eight groups will have these two teams.

Possibility of Iran would group with USA?
There is a 0% chance for that to happen. In all likelihoods, Iran and USA will be placed in the same Pot C.

Possibility of Iran would group with Mexico?
Again, it should be 0% for the same reason as Iran and USA. The only possibility is that Mexico would be placed in Pot A as it is ranked in the FIFA's top 8.

FANS theater production

British soccer drama, staring Parivz Parastoui, grips Iran theater audiences

TEHRAN (Reuters) - English soccer's perhaps most famous club, Manchester United, has taken center stage in this year's hottest theater production in
Iran.

Extra seating had to be set up on the stage itself to accommodate the crowds who flocked to see writer-director Mohammad Rahmanian's F.A.N.S, which depicts a dysfunctional, soccer-mad family living in 1960s Manchester.

Now embarking on an international tour including Sweden and Canada, the play centres on the life of the Shelton family -- Frankie, Agnes, Nancy and Sonny -- whose first initials make up the play's title and its central theme.

Yokohama, Japan
August 17th, 19:30
(3:30 am LA time)

The Match:

Mirzapour was by far the best player during the first 20 minutes of the game, defending the Iranian goal from the constant Japanese attack, but eventually after an obvious defensive line mistake, Akira Kaji found the goal empty and scored an easy one at minute 28.

Just before the end of the first half we saw a strong shot from Ali Daei which hit the left vertical post but did not go in.

The second half was more balanced, with attacks from both sides. At minute 76 a corner kick got reflected from Kaabi, standing on the goal line, but then hit Mirzapour's knee and landed in the goal.

There was not much action after that except for Ali Daei's penalty kick goal, at minute 79, which brought some hope to the Iranian team for a few minutes before the final whistle.

Iran received two yellow cards (Javad Nakounam, Yahya Golmohammadi) and the Japanese got two.

After the Match:

On the same day, in the other game of the Germany World Cup 2006 qualifying group in Manama, Bahrain lost 2-3 to North Korea.

After 6 games for each team, Iran stands at the 2nd place of Group B with 13 points. Japan with 15 is at the top.

Japan and Iran qualified from Group B, while Saudi Arabia and Korea Republic qualified from Group A.

Iran's FIFA ranking is 15, ahead of Japan 17 for August '05.

World Cup Sex

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4081430.stm

Berlin prepares for World Cup sex

Berlin is expecting an influx of prostitutes during next year's World Cup and city health officials plan to distribute 100,000 free condoms.

The free condoms will be accompanied by leaflets giving men advice on how to behave with prostitutes.

The leaflets will set out 10 "rules" for prostitutes' clients, Ms Schmiedhofer, health director for Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district, told the BBC News website.

She ruled out Berlin introducing so-called "sex sheds" - special drive-in enclosures for prostitutes and their clients which have been pioneered in Cologne.

The German news magazine Stern says an area the size of a football pitch was earmarked for prostitution in Cologne's Longerich district in October 2001.

It was fenced off and photography was banned there. The enclosure was designed to stop illegal kerb-crawling in the city centre and according to Stern, it has been declared a success.

PROSTITUTION IN EU STATES

Netherlands: prostitutes treated as self-employed persons; street prostitution in managed zones; brothels legal but subject to licensing

Germany: similar rights for prostitutes to those of the Dutch though prostitution subject to VAT; legal brothels and recognised red light zones

France: prostitution legal - soliciting and procuring are not

Sweden: prostitution legal but buying sex is not, so clients risk prosecution

UK: prostitution not officially illegal but soliciting, procuring and brothel-keeping are

Tehran, Iran
June 8th, 19:05
(7:35 am LA time)

Salaam Aalmaan
Good Morning Germany

"Khabar Khabar Dobaareh
Teeme Por Az Setaareh
Shaadi o Eftekhaaro
Be Armaghaan Miaareh"

Before the Match:

"Jame Jahanee Enshaalaah".
These were the words of Branko Ivankovic in Farsi in his interview during national team's practice session yesterday. And sweet victory made his wish come true.

Four years ago in Manama, Iran's qualification for the 2002 World Cup depended on a win when Bahrain's 3 to 1 victory resulted in Saudi Arabia qualifying instead. 60 million Iranians watched in despair and disgust as Bahrainian players made a victory lap waiving the flag of Saudi Arabia.

Tonight's game was just about one thing, receiving a single point and qualifying for the World Cup, but the extra joy of Iran's victory, wiped out the painful memories of Manama 2001 and along with it, the images of Bahrainian players falling down left and right, grass rolling, and killing time in any imaginable way.

The Match:

During the first two minutes of the match we got four corner kicks in a row and on the fourth one Nekounam passed the ball to Nosrati, whose header was reflected back off the right Bahrainian vertical pole.

45 minutes later, the first half finishing with no goals but 8 corners for Iran (vs 2 for Bahrain) was proof that although Bahrianians desperately needed the 3 points, the Iranian team was controlling the game.

At the beginning of the second half (min 48) Zandi's deep ball from a free kick and Nosrati's header which reflected off the ground and landed in goal, secured Iran's qualification to the 2006 World Cup.

In the second half we saw more attacks from Iran. After min 90, Bahrianians had a few attacks one of which was very dangerous but the ball went to out and Ferdosipour's comment "Nafase Raahati Meekeshim, va Kheyli Ham Raahate In Nafas" beautifully described how everyone in the stadium must have felt.

Iran received three yellow cards (Ferydoon Zandi, Sattar Zare, Mehdi Mahdavikia) and the Bahranians got two.

After the Match:

The fact that everyone in Iran and Iranians all around the world were making preparations for a victory party had put enormous pressure on the players, but the nervous team played a beautiful game and in front of an audience of 75000 men and 50 women, waving hundreds of red, white and green flags and shouting "Iran Chi Kaaresh Kardeh, Soorakh Soorakhesh Kardeh", the Iranian national soccer team made history and June 8th 2005 (18 Khordad 1384) became an unforgettable day for all soccer fans watching the game.

"Ey Iran" was broadcasted in the Stadium.

A huge Iranian flag carrying the words "Khalije Hamishe Farse Iran" covered several rows of expectators.

With so many national team members playing in Germany, it was like "roohe almaan dar iran damideh shodeh"

On the Side:

Many clubs (Farhangsaraas) in Iran had live viewings of the match to groups of youngsters in a sports club environment.

The first floor tickets were 2,000 tomans and the second floor tickets were 1,000 tomans each, though they were traded for up to 20,000 tomans in the black market.

Tonight's win which puts Iran at the top of group B means Iran will be seeded 3rd in it's World Cup group. That would increase our chances of going to round of 16 due to a weaker team being seeded 4th.

Group B:

On the same day, in the other game of the Germany World Cup 2006 qualifying group in Pyongyang, N. Korea played against Japan at 15:05 Tehran time, (3:35 am LA time). Japan received three points from this game with two goals.

After 4 games for each team, Iran stands at the top of Group B with 13 points, followed by Japan 12, Bahrain 4 and N. Korea 0 points each.

Iran's FIFA ranking is 18, behind Japan 17, but ahead of Denmark and Germany tied at 19 for May '05.

Iran's next match is on August 17th against Japan in Japan.

Tabrik va Tasliat !

Tehran, Iran (19:05)
(7:35 am LA time)

An all defensive North Korean team had come to the field hoping for a draw, which gave the Iranian team many opportunities to attack, though not as many goals.

Despite more than 20 fouls ( 3/4 of which committed by the Koreans ) and 7 yellow cards (2 for Iran: Rezaei, and Kabi), it was quite a calm game compared to Iran's last match with N. Korea in Pyongyang.

The only goal of the match at the end of the first half (min 45+3) came from Mahdavikia's (no. 2) deep ball from a free kick from the right side that was headed back by Gol Mohammadi and a final header from Rahman Rezaei (no. 5) hit the underside of the crossbar and went in. Both Gol Mohammadi and Rezaei being defenders shows the magnitude of Iranian presence in Korea's penalty box.

In the second half, recently married Ali Daei, perhaps to impress his bride, played one of his best games in a while. The Korean goal keeper blocked several headers from Daei. Fans in the stadium were shouting "ALI DAEI" over and over again.

N. Korean head coach was given a red card during the last minutes of the second half and was sent to sit with the fans.

With this victory Iranian national soccer team only needs one more point to secure it's place as one of the two teams qualifying from Group B to go to 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany.

The Azadi stadium was only half full due to precautions taken after the fatal incident last month. Tickets were color coded (yellow, blue, green, and red) to match the seats and paths to the gates were marked with matching colors to reduce the risk of any injuries.

Another highlight of the game was Mr. Shafeei, whose memorable quotations always bring additional joy to the games. "Sar Morabiye Besyaar Nime Asabiye Teame Kore", "Maze Maze Mikone Bezane, Nazane, va Nemizane", "Baaziye Japon Bahrain Har Natijei Daashte Baashe Baraaye Maa Kheyli Moheme". He also mentioned that today was the 26th anniversary of A. Khomeyni's ertehaal.

This was Iran's 18th game against N. Korea, we have 13 wins and 5 draws.

In the other game of the group in Manama, Bahrain, Japan's only goal secured them a victory against Bahrain.

After 4 games for each team, Iran stands at the top of Group B with 10 points, followed by Japan 9, Bahrain 4 and N. Korea 0 points each.

Iran's FIFA ranking is 18, behind Japan 17, but ahead of Denmark and Germany tied at 19 for May '05.

Iran's next match is on June 8th against Bahrain in Tehran at 19:05 (7:35 am LA time)

PYONGYANG KOREA DPR - March 30th, 2005

From the very beginning it was an unusual game. The North Korean officials had allowed expectators to watch the match while standing around the field. The game had to be postponed 15 minutes to get these fans out of the field.

It was an equal game till minute 33 when a free kick by Mahdavikia and a little help from the Korean defender An Yong-Hak's header gave Iran the lead. The first half ended 1-0 for Iran.

The second half was all defense for Iran and we were under enormous pressure from the N. Koreans. All Korean's except for their goal keeper were in our side of the field and a couple of offsides were called at the midfield line. However, in a beautiful play from Karimi, and Mahdavikia the ball reached Nekounam who scored the second goal for Iran at minute 80.

A few minutes later after the dive of a Korean in our penalty box and the referee's decision to continue the play, the Korean's lost their cool and Nam was given a red card for pushing the referee.

After 3 games for each team this match secured Iran another 3 points which puts us at the top of Group B with 7 points, followed by Japan 6, Bahrain 4 and N. Korea 0 points each.

At the other match of the group last night, own goal gives Japan 1-0 win over Bahrain.

Despite this and the previous victory against Japan Iran's FIFA ranking stays unchanged at 20 for March '05.

Iran's next match is on June 3rd against N. Korea in Tehran.

Sweet Eydi to Hamvatanaane Aziz
Iran wins over Japan in an exciting match. More than 100K people showed up. The Azadi stadium was full of expectators and the doors were closed 5 hours before the start of the game. Iran took the game to the locker room 1-0 at half time after Hashemian's goal at min 25. The fans were supportive even after the Japanese scored the equalizer in the second half at min 65. It was becoming the cause of many stomach aches, like several recent games of our National team, but a header from Hashemian, who also plays for Bayern Munich, at min 75 saved the game for Iran.

Iran stands second in the table after Bahrain, which beat North Korea 2-1 earlier today, both with 4 points followed by Japan 3 and North Korea 0 points each.

Iran has four more games to play, with the first match coming up this Tuesday March 29th, at 10:35pm PST (Wednesday March 30th, at 11:05am Tehran time).
