Simpsons, the movie

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6287064.stm

The US town of Springfield, Vermont, has beaten 13 rivals and will host the premiere of the film about the animated family The Simpsons.

The show is set in a fictional Springfield because its creator, Matt Groening, spotted that it is one of the most common place-names in the US.

The premiere is on 21 July, ahead of national US release on 27 July.

The town of just over 9,000 residents got 15,367 votes, beating the Illinois entry by 733, according to USA Today, which conducted the poll.

The other contenders were in the states of Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio and Tennessee.

http://fest07.sffs.org/films/film_details.php?id=40

San Francisco International Film Festival

2007: Apr 26 - May 10

A Few Days Later ...
Niki Karimi

In her second narrative feature, Iranian writer/director/actress Niki Karimi presents a gorgeous minimalist portrait of a woman crushed by indecision. At first it seems that 34-year-old graphic designer Shahrzad goes about her daily life—working, driving, listening to phone messages—with placid ease, but her surface stillness masks a maelstrom of weighty decisions she desperately wishes to avoid making. Shahrzad is contemplating leaving her boyfriend, with whom she is raising a disabled son. At the same time, her father is very ill. Although boyfriend, son and father loom large in Shahrzad’s psyche, these characters appear infrequently. Instead, the film's focus is firmly on Shahrzad as she grows distracted at work, watches TV as a deadening means of avoidance, ignores persistent phone messages and repeatedly drives her car to the same lookout point. Her supervisor is unhappy with her latest work, an obnoxious neighbor constantly parks his SUV in her space and she must transfer her son to a new hospital. Despite her best efforts to maintain solitude and inertia, she eventually must contend with some tough choices. Karimi’s style shows the influence of Iranian master Abbas Kiarostami, with whom she has worked. Like her previous feature One Night, A Few Days Later. . . tells a gripping story of personal choice amid a vividly depicted social and cultural milieu.

Is Borat making fun of Khazakhstan or US?

Khazakhstan has a higher literacy rates than US, it also has a higher percententage of secondary school enrolment.

Grass - From Ahvaz to Isfahan

http://www.milestonefilms.com/movie.php/grass/

The migration of the Bakhtiari Tribe

A classic adventure by the makers of "King Kong." In 1924, neophyte filmmakers Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack hooked up with journalist and sometime spy Marguerite Harrison and set off to film an adventure. They found excitement, danger and unparalleled drama in the migration of the Bakhtiari tribe of Persia (now Iran). Twice a year, more than 50,000 people and half a million animals surmounted seemingly impossible obstacles to take their herds to pasture.

The filmmakers captured unforgettable images of courage and determination as the Bakhtiari braved the raging and icy waters of the half-mile-wide Karun River. Cooper and Schoedsack almost froze when they filmed the breathtaking, almost unbelievable, sight of an endless river of men, women and children--their feet bare or wrapped in rags — winding up the side of the sheer, snow-covered rock face of the 15,000-foot-high Zardeh Kuh mountain.

Although many documentary historians consider "Grass" second only to "Nanook of the North," few people have actually ever seen this legendary film. This restored and full-length version, complete with an authentic new Iranian score, will astonish today’s audiences with its beautiful photography and heart-stopping adventure.

Farinelli - Castrato Superstar

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/5171892.stm

The body of the world's most famous castrato singer, Farinelli (born Carlo Broschi in 1705), has been exhumed to try to find out how his virtuoso voice developed.

Scholars in the northern Italian city of Bologna will measure his skull and bones and perform DNA tests.

The project has been organised by the Farinelli Study Centre in Bologna, a group of scholars hoping to raise awareness of the singer's achievements.

Castrati singers were popular in Europe from the 16th Century until 1870 when the operation was banned.

The castrato's voice was prized for its combination of pitch and power - an unbroken male voice able to reach the highest notes, delivered by the powerful lungs of a fully-grown man.

In 17th and 18th Century Italy, up to 4,000 boys a year, often from poor families, were castrated from the age of eight upwards.

Very few actually went on to achieve success, but those who did became the pop stars of their day, and they behaved as such.

Tiburon Film Festival, Mar

http://www.tiburonfilmfestival.com/festival.php

Tiburon International Film Festival
1680 Tiburon Blvd., Tiburon CA 94920 USA
Telephone: 1(415) 381-4123
Fax: 1(415) 388-4123
E-Mail: info@tiburonfilmfestival.com
Web: www.tiburonfilmfestival.com

2006

Tiburon international film festival is starting next week, and they are showing lots of interesting (and not necessarily good!) Iranian movies.

Some of you asked me before about these movies. I tried to be brief, and didn't include the information you can find on the web site, but I included the URL for each film.

* There is a tribute to Shirin Neshat. As you may know, she is one of the most famous and hip artists in New York. She's very famous for her photographs, but she's also a film maker. Almost all of her art works are
about women, and religion. You've probably seen some of her photos. Her videos are more experimental than conventional. She will be there in person, don't miss seeing her. For all Iranians, Behrooz Vosoughi is going to be there too! :)
They will show 4 of her videos: Zarin, The Last Word, Making of Mahdokht, and Tooba.
Show Time: Monday, March 13 @ 7:30 PM

* Also, there's another film called 9/11/03: A Day in the Life of New York, which is a documentary about the lives of few New Yorkers including Shirin Neshat and Salman Rushdie.
ShowTime: Sunday, March 12, 2006 @ 05:30 PM

* There's a documentary by my brother Bahman about a small group of nomadic gypsies in North of Iran that people call "Infidels". If you're a documentary kind of person, don't miss the opportunity to see this movie!
Show Time: Thursday, March 16 @ 09:25 PM
(He's not only a great documentary maker, but also a very handsome guy! Check his picture at
http://www.tiburonfilmfestival.com/contactInfo.php?contact_id=3210,
but ladies, don't ask me to introduce you to him... :))

* Mania Akbari first time appeared as the leading actress in "10" (and was great!), but immediately after that she made her first movie "20 fingers" which got a lot of attention. She's a very strong and opinionated woman, and she's not afraid of showing it in her videos. She has 6 short videos in the festival called "6 Video Arts" talking about "Self", "Repression", "Sin", "Escape", "Fear", and "Devastation".
Show Time: Tuesday, March 14 @ 3:15 pm

* "Murderer or Murdered" and "Prostitution Behind the Veil" are two documentaries about women who are sentenced to death, and about prostitutes. Get a more real image about women in Iran!
Show Time: Saturday, March 11 @ 3:25 pm

* I don't know anything about "The Slap", but I know the director "Ehsan Amani" who is a smart, intelligent and very funny guy, so I'm not surprised that the festival's catalogue says "Clever, witty, and extraordinary funny" about his movie.
Show Time: Sunday, March 12 @ 3:15 pm

* Group projects are usually not interesting, but I'm usually interested to see them! There's a movie in the festival called "Visions of Europe" by 25 European filmmakers (maybe the brightest, including Aki Kaurismaki and Peter Greenaway) that I'm going to see.
Show Time: Tuesday, March 14 @ 09:15 PM

Shrikanth, Kishan - Indian director

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4644222.stm

On the sets of the film, Kishan Shrikanth confidently calls the shots like all other directors - even though he is only 10.

Starting at the tender age of four, he has already acted in 24 regional feature films and has starred in 1,000 episodes of a hit Kannada-language soap opera on television.

But now Master Kishan has decided to try his hand at directing his first feature film, C/O Footpath (Care of Footpath), which he has also co-written.

The two hour film is about the street children who have no other address than the footpaths in India's big cities.

Kishan convinced Bollywood star Jackie Shroff, comedy actor Saurav Shukla and national award winning Kannada actress Thaara to star in the film.

Shooting for the film, which has a budget of about 8m rupees (under $200,000), is 85% complete.

C/O Footpath, due to released this year, is being shot in Kannada and is expected to be dubbed into Hindi, Oriya, Malayalam, Bengali and Tamil.

Winter Soldier

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0204058/

1972 Documentary about Vietnam

The film consists of panel testimony before and to an audience of the horrible things that the soldiers saw and did while fighting for truth justice and the American Way. That is inter-cut with one on one interviews with the film makers. Its mostly just talking heads, but its rarely boring since what these men have to say is so interesting it ends up being more like talking to friends over coffee than being lectured.

Now, the 95-minute film - which has circulated like 16-millimeter samizdat on college campuses for decades but has never been accessible to a wide audience - is about to get its first significant theatrical release in the United States, beginning on Friday at the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

Deep Throat breaks cover

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4597503.stm

A former deputy chief, who was No. 2 at the FBI has reportedly admitted to being "Deep Throat", the source who leaked secrets during the Watergate scandal. The scandal forced the resignation of US President Richard Nixon in 1974.

Deep Throat helped Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncover the Watergate affair. The story is documented in the 1976 movie "All the President's Men", directed by Alan J. Pakula, staring Dustin Hoffman (as Carl Bernstein), and Robert Redford (as Bob Woodward).

The Washington Post confirmed this story on its Web site today. Bob Woodward, part of the journalistic team that broke the scandal, confirmed W. Mark Felt as "Deep Throat" -- ending a 30-year mystery.

RED VIC MOVIE HOUSE

In 1980, a group of movie lovers decided to collectively run their own cinema. Hence, the Red Vic Movie House. For almost 10 years, Red Vic's first home was at the corner of Haight and Belvedere Streets. They introduced their now legendary couches to offer patrons a funky, yet comfy, place to watch their favorite films.

In 1991, the Red Vic moved to its present location, on Haight Street between Cole and Shraeder Streets. Unlike the orginal Red Vic location, the new Red Vic offers a larger auditorium equipped with video, 16mm and 35 mm dolby stereo sound projection. But they still have signature couches and organic treats available for your movie watching pleasure.

Every May watch the Academy Award Nominated Shorts

Calendar

The Red Vic Movie House is located on 1727 Haight Street,
