Nayernia, Karim

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5166462.stm

'Lab-made sperm' fertility hope

Professor Karim Nayernia and colleagues at the Georg-August University in Göttingen, Germany, took stem cells from a mouse embryo that was only a few days old and grew these cells in the laboratory.

Using a specialised sorting instrument they were able to isolate some stem cells that had begun to develop as sperm.

They encouraged these early-stage sperm cells, known as spermatogonial stem cells, to grow into adult sperm cells and then injected some of these into female mouse eggs.

The fertilised eggs grew and were successfully transplanted into female mice and produced seven babies.

The experiment was carried out using mice and produced seven babies, six of which lived to adulthood.

However, the mice showed abnormal patterns of growth, and other problems, such as difficulty breathing.

Professor Nayernia, who now works at Newcastle University in the UK, said: "For the first time we have created life using artificial sperm. This will help us to understand how men produce sperm and why some men are unable to do this.

About 1% of all men don't produce sperm and a further 3-4% of men have a low sperm count that could lead to infertility.

Omidyar, Pierre

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13530551/site/newsweek/page/2/

Now 39, Omidyar has devoted himself full time to the challenge of "responsibly investing" one of the dot-com era's largest fortunes, around $10 billion.

He left eBay five years ago and abandoned Silicon Valley for a quieter life in Nevada, where he and his wife, Pam, started a family foundation. In 2004, they converted it into the Omidyar Network—a philanthropic venture-capital fund that, unlike traditional charities, can invest in profitmaking businesses as well as nonprofits. The recipients, says Omidyar, are chosen because they "help people tap into their own power."

In the past two years, the Omidyar Network has committed (he shuns the term "donation") nearly $80 million to several dozen organizations.

In the evening April 13th, Dr Mohsen Mohsenin member of the International Ski Federation (IFS) and one of the pioneers of ski industry in Iran passed away in Dizin where for more than two decades he spent his time training many of Iran's best skiers.

Everyone loved Dr. Mohsenin for his humble nature and great aptitude for sports and sportsmanship. He delivered many top skiers to Tehran through Dena Ski Club, and surely did a lot of service for Iran's ski industry. His journey has left a huge gap in a lot of people's life.

I have put up a website in his memory, please take a minute and sign his memorial page MohsenMohsenin.com

Mosaffa, Mazaher, Ph.D.

http://www.iran-newspaper.com/1384/840311/html/horizon.htm#s472746

Prof. Mazaher Mosaffa was born in 1932 in arak, Iran. He has been a faculty member at the universities of Shiraz and Tehran.

Below is an excerpt from an article printed in Iran newspaper:
