Degree Confluence Project

http://www.confluence.org/

The goal of the project is to visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location. The pictures, and stories about the visits, will then be posted here.

The project is an organized sampling of the world. There is a confluence within 49 miles (79 km) of you if you're on the surface of Earth. We've discounted confluences in the oceans and some near the poles, but there are still 11,037 to be found.

Chinese woman's needle ordeal

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6983435.stm

Doctors in China have discovered 26 sewing needles embedded in the body of a 31-year-old woman.

They think they were inserted into Luo Cuifen's body when she was a baby by grandparents upset she was not a boy.

Some of these needles have penetrated vital organs, such as the lungs, liver and kidneys. One has even broken into three pieces in the woman's brain.

The needles were discovered only when Ms Luo went to hospital complaining of blood in her urine.

She was given a routine X-ray, which revealed the needles. Up until then she had been in good health.

Shahi, Sarah

http://blackdcc.net/page47.html

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Alumna Sarah Shahi

New York Magazine: Tony Soprano’s Fear and Loathing–style swing through Vegas on May 13th episode introduced America to the character of Sonya Aragon, representing what’s sure to become a new male-fantasy archetype: the gorgeous stripper with a heart of gold and a mound of peyote. (Of course, Sonya is stripping her way through college -- which Chris Rock has dismissed as “the stripper myth”!) The character left men (and not a few women) with one question in their minds: Who was that girl? It’s Sarah Shahi, a 27-year-old former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. Sarah’s birth name was Aahoo Jahansouzshahi.

Inverted Jenny Stamp

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6143218.stm

A rare stamp worth as much as $200,000 (£155,473) may be on an envelope sealed in a ballot box after the US mid-term elections, poll officials say.

Officials in Broward County, Florida, say they saw a famous "Inverted Jenny" stamp while reviewing postal ballots.

About 700 of the stamps were mistakenly printed in 1918 with an upside down illustration. Just 100 went on sale.

But it will be 22 months before laws will permit the box with the envelope to be reopened and the stamp checked.

The original stamps bear a picture of a Curtiss JN-4 plane, known as a Jenny, which was used for training pilots in World War I and later became an airmail plane.

In October 2005, a block of four Inverted Jenny stamps sold for $2.7m (£1.52m) at auction.

Maynard Guss, president of the Sunrise Stamp Club, told the Associated Press news agency that a cancelled [postmarked] Jenny would likely sell for $20,000 (£15,547) to $100,000 (£77,736).

In 1972 Professor Hirose was the first person to develop a functioning “snake robot”.

Flexible snake robots are useful because they can slither and manoeuvre through tight spaces, making them suited for search and rescue operations, for example.

He had to follow the first prototype with a trolley holding its batteries, as the power units were too large to incorporate into the body.

105 year old Iranian becomes US citizen

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-naturalize26oct26,1,1155692.story?ctrack=1&cset=true

Iranian-born Sona Babai was among 7,000 others who became U.S. citizens at ceremonies in Pomona. She joined family here six years ago.

Los Angeles Times: Sona Babai counts good health, a loving mother-in-law and 10 children as the biggest blessings of a long and fruitful life. But there was one more thing she wanted: American citizenship. So the native of Iran placed her hand over her heart, pledged allegiance to the flag and Wednesday became one of the nation's newest citizens to be sworn in. At 105 years old, she is also one of the oldest... America is a big umbrella that lets a lot of people underneath to be safe," Babai said in her native Azari language, which was translated by her son, Antoine Babai. "Because of the good hearts of American people, I want to be part of them."

Panoramic Photography by Brad Templeton

I shoot a lot of photographs, but my favourite type of shot is the stitched panoramic shot. These are made by taking a series of overlapping shots and using special software to join and blend them together seamlessly. You can shoot anything from high-res non-distorted wide-angle shots to full 360 degree wrap arounds.

With the window shade drawn, I was relaxing in my leather seat aboard a $25 million corporate jet that was flying 37,000 feet above the vast Amazon rainforest. The 7 of us on board the 13-passenger jet were keeping to ourselves.

Without warning, I felt a terrific jolt and heard a loud bang, followed by an eerie silence, save for the hum of the engines.

And then the three words I will never forget. “We’ve been hit,” said Henry Yandle, a fellow passenger standing in the aisle near the cockpit of the Embraer Legacy 600 jet.

India Skull Man

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/5151612.stm

Doctors say a section of electrician Sambhu Roy's skull fell off on Sunday, months after he suffered severe burns.

"When he came to us late last year, his scalp was completely burnt and within months it came off, exposing the skull," surgeon Ratan Lal Bandyopadhyay told Reuters.

"Later, we noticed that the part of his skull was loosening due to lack of blood supply to the affected area, which can happen in such extensive burn cases."

"When the skull came off, I thought he will die," the doctor told Reuters, "but we noticed a new covering on his head forming and that might have pushed the 'dead skull' out."

Juliette Binoche in Iran

http://www.sharghnewspaper.ir/850117/html/index.htm

Oscar winner, French actress, Juliette Binoche, (Blue, The English Patient, Chocolat) to play in Kiarostami's latest movie.

Big Foot

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4650388.stm

The government of the Malaysian state of Johor says it is to organise an attempt to track down a legendary ape man reputed to roam its jungles.

Big Foot is known in local legend as Hantu Jarang Gigi - ghosts with widely spaced teeth.

In November three fishery workers claimed to have seen a Big Foot family that left footprints up to 45cm long.

Conservationists say that damage to branches suggested that the creatures could have been up to 3m tall.

The chief minister of Johor, Abdul Ghani Othman, is setting up two teams, one of which will scour likely locations, including the densely forested Endau Rompin National Park.

Giant Squid

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4756514.stm

One of the biggest and most complete giant squids ever found is on display at London's Natural History Museum.

Measuring a monstrous 8.62m (28ft), the squid was caught off the coast of the Falkland Islands by a trawler.

Giant squid, once thought to be sea serpents, are very rarely seen and live at depths of 200-1,000m (656-3,281ft).

They can weigh up to a 1,000kg; the largest ever spotted measured a vast 18.5m and was found in 1880 off Island Bay in New Zealand.

Muslim Discovered America

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4609074.stm

A map due to be unveiled in Beijing and London next week may lend weight to a theory a Muslim Chinese admiral discovered America before Christopher Columbus.

The map, which shows North and South America, apparently states that it is a 1763 copy of another map made in 1418.

If true, it could imply Chinese mariners discovered and mapped America decades before Columbus' 1492 arrival.

Chinese characters written beside the map say it was drawn by Mo Yi Tong and copied from a map made in the 16th year of the Emperor Yongle, or 1418.

It clearly shows Africa and Australia, though the UK is not marked.

The book, 1421: The Year China discovered America, made the controversial claim that a Chinese admiral and eunuch, Zheng He, sailed around the world and discovered America on the way.

Zheng He, a Muslim mariner and explorer, is widely thought to have sailed around South East Asia and India, but the claim he visited America is hotly disputed.

The map is now being tested to check the age of its paper and ink, with the results due to be known in February.

But for some, this would still not make the Chinese admiral the first modern discoverer of the Americas, as they believe that Viking Leif Eriksson sailed to north America in the year 1000.

One-Eyed Cat

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060112/ap_on_sc/one_eyed_cat_3

Traci Allen, from Redmond in central Oregon, says the kitten she named Cy, short for Cyclops, was born the night of Dec. 28 with the single eye and no nose.

"Holoprosencephaly" causes facial deformities, according to the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health. In the worst cases, a single eye is located where the nose should be, according to the institute's Web site.

Allen said she stayed up all night with the deformed kitten on her recliner, feeding Cy a liquid formula through a syringe. She says she cared for the kitten the next day as well, until it died that evening.

Allen said she's keeping the cat's corpse in her freezer for now, in case scientists would like it for research.

Car Plows into Bijan Bakery

http://www.bijanbakery.com/

According to police, a woman was pulling her black 2001 Honda Accord into a parking space in front of the Bijan Bakery & Cafe, 441 Saratoga Ave., at about 9:47 a.m. But she stepped on the gas instead of the brake, careening through the bakery's glass door and striking a customer and an employee.

The employee, a 20-year-old woman, suffered two broken legs, San Jose Police Sgt. Nick Muyo said. The customer, a 50-year-old man, had one leg broken.

The driver, 60, was alone in the car and was not injured. She was released to family at the scene pending review by the police department's traffic officers, Muyo said.

Ski in Dubai

Snow comes to deserts of Dubai

Ski Dubai has 5 slopes that vary in difficulty, height and steepness, the longest run being 400 meters with a fall of over 60 meters. Test your skills on the world’s first indoor black run or practice your turns on the gentle beginner slopes. The Snow Park, at 3000 square meters is the largest indoor park in the world.

Photo Gallery

More Photo

Built on what was previously desert sand, the slopes will be covered with manufactured snow all year round.

The indoor centre has green, blue, red and black runs, chairlifts and snow patrols, like any other ski resort.

The area under snow is the equivalent of three football pitches, with runs built inside a giant, slanting metal tube around 25 floors high.

All clothing and equipment is provided in the entrance price of $35, including black, knee-length padded coats for any Arabs who prefer to wear their traditional kandouras to visit the snow - but skiing in the robes will be banned.

The snow is made by shooting water at high pressure into an atmosphere maintained at around freezing point by coolers both below and above the slopes.

22,500m² covered with real snow all year round – (equivalent to 3 football fields)

Temperature maintained at a comfortable -1º to -2º

85 meters high (approximately 25 stories) and 80 meters wide

Grand Canyon Skywalk

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/08/0826_050826_grandcanyon.html

August 26, 2005—Fear of heights? This is definitely no place for you.

The all-glass skywalk will extend over the edge of the Grand Canyon, 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) above the Colorado River.
The Skywalk is scheduled to open to the public in January 2006 as part of a new resort on the reservation. The resort, known as Grand Canyon West, is to include a re-created Indian village and a restaurant perched on the edge of the canyon. Tourism is the reservation's biggest source of income.

Grand Canyon West will be on the western edge of Grand Canyon National Park, about 120 miles (about 200 kilometers) from Las Vegas. But perhaps not even the Las Vegas Strip's over-the-top attractions will be a match for this glass-bottom walkway over the world's biggest gorge.

San Fermin, Pamplona, July

http://www.sanfermin.com

Fiesta de San Fermin
Running of the Bulls

For most of the year, Pamplona is just like any other Spanish provincial town. But in July Pamplona is transformed into the focus of a cosmopolitan bacchanal. The annual nine-day festival of San Fermin, which concludes today, draws the curious, the naive and the foolhardy from around the world to run through the streets pursued by six fighting bulls.

A rocket would signal that the bulls had been released, heralding an 850-metre charge through Pamplona's winding streets to the bullring.

. The San Fermin festival began in the 16th Century
. It is named after the patron saint of the diocese of Pamplona
. The bulls run through the streets in the morning and fight in the bullring in the afternoon
. Pamplona's population of 200,000 swells with up to two million visitors over the weekend
. Its all-night parties are as famous as its bulls
. Jumping off a fountain into the arms of waiting friends is a recent tradition
. The Cardinal bull run rule - when you go down, stay down
. There have been 13 deaths since 1924

Sean Penn in new role at Friday Prayers in Tehran

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Hollywood actor Sean Penn, adopting the role of a journalist, scribbled in his notebook as Friday prayer worshippers in Tehran chanted "Death to America."

Penn, 44, in Iran on a brief assignment for the San Francisco Chronicle ahead of presidential elections on June 17, may be one of the best known faces in film, but he went unrecognized by the 6,000 faithful at Tehran University.

The actor, who visited Iraq before and after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 and wrote an account of his second trip for the Chronicle, told Reuters he had decided to come to Iran because of growing tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Gorgeous Nazanin crowned world's princess
Dec 8, 2003

North Van's Miss Canada crowned World's princess UBC (University of British Columbia) graduate Nazanin Afshin-Jam takes first runner-up at Miss World By Stuart Hunter

With a global television audience of two billion people watching, a Canadian beauty was crowned yesterday. But all North Vancouver's Nazanin Afshin-Jam, 24, wanted after being named first runner-up in the Miss World competition in the southern Chinese resort city of Sanya was a Krispy Kreme doughnut, said her beaming older sister 'Naz'. "We're really proud of her," said Naz, 29, the elder of the two children of 'Jaleh' and 'Afshin Jam', who flew to China to watch their youngest, nicknamed "Nini," as she scored the highest-ever ranking for a Canadian woman in the Miss World contest. "She accomplished a lot in her life to warrant where she is today. This is one of the best experiences of her life." Miss Ireland, 19-year-old Rosanna Davison -- the daughter of Lady in Red songsmith Chris De Burgh -- won the Miss World crown. Afshin-Jam took second-place honours. China's Guan Qi was third in the field of 106 contestants. Afshin-Jam won the Miss World Canada crown in October in Toronto. Born in Iran, Afshin-Jam fled her homeland with her family after the fall of the shah. Although fiercely proud of her Canadian nationality, the Kitsilano Secondary grad who graduated from the University of B.C. with a double major in international relations and political science, also remains a role model for Persian women. "She's had thousands of e-mails from Persian women from around the world telling her how proud they are of her," Naz said. "They are proud that a Persian woman can speak with such a strong voice." Not only is the five foot seven inch, brown-eyed beauty a model and actor, but Afshin-Jam has pilot licences for powered aircraft and gliders. She also holds the highest rank possible in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and she speaks four languages -- English, French, Farsi and Spanish. She has training in singing, dance, public speaking and bush survival skills, and lists kayaking, sailing and go-kart racing as her favourite sports. She works with the Red Cross teaching kids about global issues such as poverty and child hunger. And, Naz adds with a laugh, her sister is single. Afshin-Jam is taking a year off from her broadcast journalism studies at the B.C. Institute of Technology to fulfil her role as Miss World Canada. In the future, she hopes to emulate one of her heroes, journalist Christiane Amanpour, as a foreign correspondent.

Afshin-Jam slated to return to B.C. today. And then there's the little matter of that doughnut. "She said she can't wait to have a Krispy Kreme," Naz said. "And she wants to meet Nelson Mandela." The Miss World pageant marked the first time China has hosted an international beauty contest. A $15.5-million tiara-shaped convention hall was built for the event, which China hopes will boost tourism in the palm-dotted resort city on the island province of Hainan. Contest judges included film star Jackie Chan and Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell. There were no disruptions at this year's event, unlike last year, when the contest had to be moved from Nigeria to London after deadly rioting between Muslims and Christians. MISS NINI Nickname: Nini Favourite junk food: Chocolate Lava Cake Favourite colour: Fuchsia Favourite smell: Vanilla Favourite soul food: "Too many choices" Favourite magazine: National Geographic Favourite music: Spanish-Arab fusion Favourite book: Mahatma Gandhi by Mahatma Gandhi Person You Would Most Like to Meet: Nelson Mandela

Pope's Assassination in 1981

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/picture_gallery/05/europe_pope_john_paul_ii/html/4.stm

Picture of Pope John Paul II's assassination attempt on 13 May 1981.

The Turkish gunman who shot Pope John Paul II in 1981 has returned to prison, eight days after being freed.

The Turkish gunman who tried to kill Pope John Paul II almost 25 years ago has been released from prison.

Mehmet Ali Agca, served nearly 20 years in Italian jails for the attempted murder. In Turkey, he was jailed for bank robbery and another murder.

Agca, 48, shot the Pope in St Peter's Square in 1981, but has never explained why. The pontiff later visited him in jail and publicly forgave him.

Hours after Agca walked free, Turkish Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said he wanted to make sure there had not been any legal errors.

One of Italy's most respected magistrates in the 1980s, who probed the attack at the time, has warn that Agca's life is at risk because of the many secrets he knows.

Ferdinando Imposimato is convinced of Soviet bloc involvement. The Pope at the time was preaching a message that challenged Soviet communism's collectivist ideology.

"I think the Turkish government should guarantee Agca's security because he knows so many secrets and he may be killed," he said in an interview with Reuters TV on Wednesday.
