VantageScore, new credit scoring system

http://experian.global-pressoffice.com/documents/showdoc.cfm?doc=2129

Costa Mesa, Calif. — March 14, 2006 — Experian®, the global information solutions company, today announced the launch of VantageScoresm , the credit reporting industry’s first credit score developed jointly by the three national credit reporting companies to deliver consistent, objective credit scores across their respective databases. This innovative new approach to credit scoring simplifies the credit granting process for businesses and consumers alike by providing a consistent, objective score to the marketplace.

By combining cutting-edge, patent-pending analytic techniques with a highly intuitive scale for scoring, VantageScore will provide consumers and businesses with a highly predictive, consistent score that is easy to understand and apply. VantageScore uses score ranges from 501 to 990 (compared with FICO scores, with a range of 300 to 850). Consumers and credit grantors alike will recognize the logical score groupings that approximate the familiar academic scale:

901-990 A
801-900 B
701-800 C

Pay the Loan Automatically

Being late on your student loans can ruin your credit. So set up "automatic payment" plans. If you have a 25-year loan, find out the minimum payment per month required and set it up to have your bank debit your account five days before it's due so you won't be late.

Start Saving, Too

I'm often asked if a person should pay their student loans off first before they save for a home or use their retirement account at work. My answer is that if your interest rate is low, and most student loans are, pay the minimum due and focus the rest of your money on getting out of high-rate credit-card debt and towards saving for the future.

Appraisal fraud

http://money.cnn.com/2005/05/23/real_estate/financing/appraisalfraud/index.htm

Appraisal fraud: your home at risk

Appraisers say they're pressured to inflate their estimates of home values.

Anyone who's ever bought or refinanced a home knows the sense of relief when the appraisal comes in with high marks.

One overvalued appraisal can skew home prices throughout a neighborhood, according to the Appraisal Institute's Kelly. "If a house is appraised for 10 percent or 15 percent more than it's actually worth and the sale closes, it may be used by another appraiser as a comparable sale the very next day," he said. "It has a ripple effect."

How do I request a "fraud alert" be placed on my file?
You have the right to ask that nationwide consumer credit reporting companies place "fraud alerts" in your file to let potential creditors and others know that you may be a victim of identity theft. A fraud alert can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you. It also may delay your ability to obtain credit. You may place a fraud alert in your file by calling just one of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies. As soon as that agency processes your fraud alert, it will notify the other two, which then also must place fraud alerts in your file.

Equifax: 1-877-576-5734; www.equifax.com
Experian: 1-888-397-3742; www.experian.com/fraud
TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289; www.transunion.com

An initial fraud alert stays in your file for at least 90 days. An extended alert stays in your file for seven years. To place either of these alerts, a consumer credit reporting company will require you to provide appropriate proof of your identity, which may include your Social Security number. If you ask for an extended alert, you will have to provide an identity theft report. An identity theft report includes a copy of a report you have filed with a federal, state, or local law enforcement agency. For more detailed information about the identity theft report, visit www.consumer.gov/idtheft.
