A Few Days Later ...
Niki Karimi
In her second narrative feature, Iranian writer/director/actress Niki Karimi presents a gorgeous minimalist portrait of a woman crushed by indecision. At first it seems that 34-year-old graphic designer Shahrzad goes about her daily life—working, driving, listening to phone messages—with placid ease, but her surface stillness masks a maelstrom of weighty decisions she desperately wishes to avoid making. Shahrzad is contemplating leaving her boyfriend, with whom she is raising a disabled son. At the same time, her father is very ill. Although boyfriend, son and father loom large in Shahrzad’s psyche, these characters appear infrequently. Instead, the film's focus is firmly on Shahrzad as she grows distracted at work, watches TV as a deadening means of avoidance, ignores persistent phone messages and repeatedly drives her car to the same lookout point. Her supervisor is unhappy with her latest work, an obnoxious neighbor constantly parks his SUV in her space and she must transfer her son to a new hospital. Despite her best efforts to maintain solitude and inertia, she eventually must contend with some tough choices. Karimi’s style shows the influence of Iranian master Abbas Kiarostami, with whom she has worked. Like her previous feature One Night, A Few Days Later. . . tells a gripping story of personal choice amid a vividly depicted social and cultural milieu.

Marathon Training Program:
Mileage Build-Up
Building a Base
Without question, the most important area one should focus upon prior to beginning marathon training is to safely build a mileage base. I believe that one should be running four to five days a week with minimum mileage totals of 25 miles per week before considering training for a marathon. From that point, long run and weekly mileage can be added in small increments.
The Ten Percent Rule
Do not increase either your (1) weekly mileage and/or (2) long run mileage by more than 10 percent a week. Doing so greatly increases the chances of incurring an injury, thereby delaying or stopping your training all together. Refer to How to Avoid Injury section for additional information.
Where to Start
Please refer to the Mileage Buildup Schedule (Schedule I) below to find the level of training that most closely matches your present training routine/volume. Start training at that point and follow the schedule. When you have reached the end of Schedule I, you have now developed a base from where you may now consider training for a marathon. Since the Marathon Training Schedule (Schedule II) is a 17-week program, continue to train at the concluding levels of Schedule I until the marathon you wish to run is four months away.
For marathons even further down the road, the best approach in filling the time gap between schedules is to put your training in a "holding pattern". During this time, once you reach the 10-mile mark of your long run, you can then alternate your long run sequence weekly as follows: 8, 9, 10, and then 6-mile long runs. As a means of facilitating leg rest and recovery, "easy weeks" are recommended every fourth week where both weekly mileage and the distance of the long run is reduced.

Using a training schedule without basic knowledge of training principles and injury prevention strategies, and without the consultation of a coach can indeed be hazardous to your health! Check out my Personal Training page if you might be interested in me designing an individualized training schedule to match your ability level with your goals/needs for an upcoming marathon or shorter distance race.

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition
Jun 10th 2006 - Jan 31st 2007
Metreon
101 Fourth St., San Francisco
Tickets: $14.95 to $19.95
One of the most impressive — and massive — objects on display will be a 17-by-26-foot, 30,000-pound hunk of the ship's port side from C-deck, a middle deck housing first-class passengers.
Millions of people have flocked to the exhibition in some 20 countries in the past 12 years.
On its storied maiden voyage, the reputedly unsinkable Royal Mail Steamer Titanic struck an iceberg and sank in the early morning of April 15, 1912, killing 1,522 of its 2,227 passengers.

Mother's Day
http://www.holidays.net/mother/index.htm
Being a Mom
We are sitting at lunch one day when my daughter casually mentions that she and her husband are thinking of "starting a family."
"We're taking a survey," she says half-joking. "Do you think I should have a baby?" "It will change your life," I say, carefully keeping my tone neutral.
"I know," she says, "no more sleeping in on weekends, no more spontaneous vacations."
But that is not what I meant at all. I look at my daughter, trying to decide what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes.
I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing will heal, but becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will forever be vulnerable. I consider warning her that she will never again read a newspaper without asking, "What if that had been MY child?"
That every plane crash, every house fire will haunt her. That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die.
I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive level of a bear protecting her cub.
That an urgent call of "Mom!" will cause her to drop a souffle or her best crystal without a moments hesitation.
I feel that I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she would be professionally derailed by motherhood. She might arrange for childcare, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting and she will think of her baby's sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure her baby is all right.
I want my daughter to know that every day decisions will no longer be routine. That a five year old boy's desire to go to the men's room rather than the women's at McDonald's will become a major dilemma.
That right there, in the midst of clattering trays and screaming children, issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in that restroom.
However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother. Looking at my attractive daughter, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the pounds of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same about herself.
That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. That she would give herself up in a moment to save her offspring, but will also begin to hope for more years, not to accomplish her own dreams, but to watch her child accomplish theirs.
I want her to know that a cesarean scar or shiny stretch marks will become badges of honor. My daughter's relationship with her husband will change, and not in the way, she thinks. I wish she could understand how much more you can love a man who is careful to powder the baby or who never hesitates to play with his child. I think she should know that she would fall in love with him again for reasons she would now find very unromantic. I wish my daughter could sense the bond she will feel with women throughout history who have tried to stop war, prejudice and drunk driving.
I want to describe to my daughter the exhilaration of seeing your child learn to ride a bike. I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog or cat for the first time. I want her to taste the joy that is so real it actually hurts.
My daughter's quizzical look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes. "You'll never regret it," I finally say. Then I reached across the table, squeezed my daughter's hand and offered a silent prayer for her, and for me, and for all the mere mortal women who stumble their way into this most wonderful of callings.

Tiburon Film Festival, Mar

2006
Tiburon international film festival is starting next week, and they are showing lots of interesting (and not necessarily good!) Iranian movies.
Some of you asked me before about these movies. I tried to be brief, and didn't include the information you can find on the web site, but I included the URL for each film.
* There is a tribute to Shirin Neshat. As you may know, she is one of the most famous and hip artists in New York. She's very famous for her photographs, but she's also a film maker. Almost all of her art works are
about women, and religion. You've probably seen some of her photos. Her videos are more experimental than conventional. She will be there in person, don't miss seeing her. For all Iranians, Behrooz Vosoughi is going to be there too! :)
They will show 4 of her videos: Zarin, The Last Word, Making of Mahdokht, and Tooba.
Show Time: Monday, March 13 @ 7:30 PM
* Also, there's another film called 9/11/03: A Day in the Life of New York, which is a documentary about the lives of few New Yorkers including Shirin Neshat and Salman Rushdie.
ShowTime: Sunday, March 12, 2006 @ 05:30 PM
* There's a documentary by my brother Bahman about a small group of nomadic gypsies in North of Iran that people call "Infidels". If you're a documentary kind of person, don't miss the opportunity to see this movie!
Show Time: Thursday, March 16 @ 09:25 PM
(He's not only a great documentary maker, but also a very handsome guy! Check his picture at
http://www.tiburonfilmfestival.com/contactInfo.php?contact_id=3210,
but ladies, don't ask me to introduce you to him... :))
* Mania Akbari first time appeared as the leading actress in "10" (and was great!), but immediately after that she made her first movie "20 fingers" which got a lot of attention. She's a very strong and opinionated woman, and she's not afraid of showing it in her videos. She has 6 short videos in the festival called "6 Video Arts" talking about "Self", "Repression", "Sin", "Escape", "Fear", and "Devastation".
Show Time: Tuesday, March 14 @ 3:15 pm
* "Murderer or Murdered" and "Prostitution Behind the Veil" are two documentaries about women who are sentenced to death, and about prostitutes. Get a more real image about women in Iran!
Show Time: Saturday, March 11 @ 3:25 pm
* I don't know anything about "The Slap", but I know the director "Ehsan Amani" who is a smart, intelligent and very funny guy, so I'm not surprised that the festival's catalogue says "Clever, witty, and extraordinary funny" about his movie.
Show Time: Sunday, March 12 @ 3:15 pm
* Group projects are usually not interesting, but I'm usually interested to see them! There's a movie in the festival called "Visions of Europe" by 25 European filmmakers (maybe the brightest, including Aki Kaurismaki and Peter Greenaway) that I'm going to see.
Show Time: Tuesday, March 14 @ 09:15 PM

A Eulogy for King, a Scolding for Bush
http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-na-coretta8feb08,0,6083766.story?coll=la-headlines-frontpage
A day of eulogizing Coretta Scott King turned into a rare, in-person rebuke of President Bush, with a succession of civil rights and political leaders assailing White House policies as evidence that the dream of social and racial equality pursued by King and her slain husband was far from reality.

Bush prepares for keynote address
US President George W Bush is preparing for his fifth annual State of the Union address, at the start of a critical election year for the Republican party.
In the speech, to a joint session of Congress, Mr Bush will focus on Iraq, efforts to restrain Iran's nuclear programme, and Hamas' election victory.
He will make health care reform central to his domestic policy agenda.
With Mr Bush's approval ratings hovering around 41%, aides suggested that he would not announce any radical reform packages.

Never on Sunday
In 1893, officials decided to move the parade to Monday, January 2 to avoid frightening horses tethered outside local churches and thus interfering with worship services. As a result of this reverent gesture, speculation abounds as to the rare instances of rainfall on New Year’s Day (only nine times in Rose Parade history), prompting some to ask the Tournament about its special pact with a “friend upstairs.” The upcoming Rose Parade is on Monday, January 2, 2006 in observance of the Never on Sunday tradition.

Seven Valleys presents master persian classical musician Mohammad Reza Lotfi on tar and setar, accompanied by his talented son Omid Lotfi on setar and Mehrdad Arabic on tonbank and daf. They take you to the world of the unseen. Poet Robert Bly has said, "My first response upon hearing Lotfi's music is astonishment. As he plays he opens a path and finally a road to that place inside us of enormous assurance, such assurance paradoxically often brings tears to the eyes."

Relay For Life, June 25-26
http://www.acsevents.org/faf/r.asp?t=4&i=94682&u=94682-81432965&e=305702915
Hello, my name is Sunoz Soroosh, but a lot of people call me Sunny. I am 18 years old and I will be attending UC Berkeley next year. I am a Persian and Arabic dancer with Niosha Dance Academy.
Once again this year, I am participating in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Tri-Cities on June 25-26, 2005 with Team Niosha Dance Academy. This is an overnight walkathon event, where each team tries to keep at least one member walking around the track for 24 hours. We also perform at this event, along with many other musicians and dancers. At the Relay for Life, there is a Luminaria ceremony, to honor loved ones lost to cancer, and a Survivor's lap to honor those who have won the battle against it. Each year, my fellow dancers and I participate in this event and raise money for cancer awareness and research, and since our dance teacher, Niosha Nafei, is a cancer survivor, this event is extremely important to us. But personally, I participate in this event in honor of my grandparents, Jamshid and Behbood Soroosh, because I lost them both to cancer. I am committed to raising money for the fight against cancer, and last year I raised 300 dollars, which was the most money out of anybody in my dance class.
This year, I have raised my goal to 400 dollars, and I hope that you can help me out by donating to this cause. You can donate online by going to my American Cancer Society webpage.
Any amount of money is appreciated, and will go to help win the fight against cancer. All donations are tax deductible and please do not hesitate to email me with any questions.
Thank you for your time,
Sunoz "Sunny" Soroosh

Red Vic movie house

RED VIC MOVIE HOUSE
In 1980, a group of movie lovers decided to collectively run their own cinema. Hence, the Red Vic Movie House. For almost 10 years, Red Vic's first home was at the corner of Haight and Belvedere Streets. They introduced their now legendary couches to offer patrons a funky, yet comfy, place to watch their favorite films.
In 1991, the Red Vic moved to its present location, on Haight Street between Cole and Shraeder Streets. Unlike the orginal Red Vic location, the new Red Vic offers a larger auditorium equipped with video, 16mm and 35 mm dolby stereo sound projection. But they still have signature couches and organic treats available for your movie watching pleasure.
Every May watch the Academy Award Nominated Shorts
The Red Vic Movie House is located on 1727 Haight Street,
between Cole and Shrader, just a block and a half east from Golden Gate Park.

Wharf to Wharf - July
http://www.wharftowharf.com/2005.htm
Wharf to Wharf 2005
Length: 6 miles
Mens record: 26:42 min
Womens record: 30:42 min
Registration: April 1st
Race day: July 21
It's the Best Little Road Race in California
Here comes the 33rd annual Wharf to Wharf Race! Are you ready? If you've run this scenic six-mile classic before, you know about the weather, the forty live bands, the throngs of festive spectators and the chance to win the coveted Wharf to Wharf Runner T-shirt, awarded only to race finishers and never sold to anyone, anywhere, at any price ... ever. If you've never run it, now's the time.
So, get off the couch, get in shape, and go for it ... and go for it soon, because Wharf to Wharf is not for everyone. Narrow streets and small town venues limit participation to 15,000 runners on a first-come-first-served basis. Nearly twice that number apply each year. Registration opens April 1st and the field typically sells out in sixty days. There is no raceday registration. If you want to run, you have to sign up early.
If you missed the cut for this year's race and want to make sure you don't get left out next year, send a Self-Addressed-Stamped-Envelope to:
