Spam e-mail - Anatomy

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6038236.stm

SENDER

"Iverson Vernie": An implausible name in capital letters

E-MAIL ADDRESS

"eieeeyuuyuioeeiiayi@fleetlease.com - Clearly fake. The company owning the domain, Fleetlease, rents vehicles - there's no reason to think it is really pushing pills.

SUBJECT

Bad spelling, exclamation point, and avoids mentioning what the message is actually about.

BODY IMAGE

The body of the message is actually an image rather than text. This image was called from another computer based in Hungary. The net service offered by this company is free. It could also be a checking mechanism which records which e-mail address responded.

EXTRA TEXT

Spammers regularly use large lumps of text to try to convince filtering systems that a message is legitimate.

Fake ATM Keypad

http://money.cnn.com/2006/01/06/news/atm_fraud/index.htm?cnn=yes

New York thieves steal thousands with rigged ATMs

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - A sophisticated group of thieves used technical trickery to steal ATM card information -- and over $100,000 -- from customers at two New York City Washington Mutual branches.

The thieves rigged fake keypads and bank-card slots onto ATMs to gather card information and encoded the information on new cards, police say.

They then used the new, fraudulent cards for withdrawals from approximately 50 Washington Mutual accounts at other ATM locations.

The two Washington Mutual branches were on Canal Street in lower Manhattan and on Hylan Boulevard on Staten Island.

The bank encouraged customers to review their account transactions and balances and to contact them promptly if any unauthorized transactions were found. Washington Mutual can be reached at 1-800-788-7000.

Consumers are protected against bank fraud, and will be eligible for a complete refund when the bank finds that the transactions were illegal. Banks typically offer the aggrieved customer a line of credit until the charges can be proved.

i-SAFE

http://www.i-safe.org/

The United States Congress has designated i-SAFE America Inc, a non-profit Internet safety foundation, to bring Internet safety education and awareness to the youth of this country.

Founded in 1998, i-SAFE is a proactive prevention-oriented Internet safety awareness program. We provide age-appropriate K-12 curriculum to schools in all 50 states FREE of charge.

i-SAFE extends education beyond the classroom with Community Outreach. We have programs for students, educators, parents, law enforcement, and community leaders. The best way for a student to take a concept and make it their own is with the support of their community. Our Youth Empowerment team helps Student Mentors take the message of Internet safety to their peers, their family, and their community. The i-PARENT program helps parents team up to bridge the "Digital Divide" that separates them and their kids. The i-SHIELD program brings together all divisions of law enforcement for one cause - cyber safety. i-SAFE is the only Internet safety program anywhere that incorporates outreach elements in its education materials and process.

Calling Iran - new 8 digit numbers

http://www.chekonim.com/p340.htm

If you have been trying to call Iran with no success, it's because the numbers have changed to 8 digits.

You should add one digit to the beginning of the old 7 digit numbers by repeating the first digit.

For example if you were dialing . 789 1234
from now on, you should dial ... 7789 1234.

This applies to all numbers except for those starting with 9.

DST, new schedule

http://www.cnn.com/2005/EDUCATION/08/11/extra.daylight.savings/index.html

Lawmakers move to extend daylight-saving time

Beginning in 2007, the new law will extend daylight-saving time by four weeks to save energy. Daylight-saving will begin three weeks earlier, on the second Sunday in March, and end one week later, on the first Sunday in November.

Halloween ;)

The extension means daylight-saving time will continue through Halloween and kids will have another hour of daylight trick-or-treating.

Technological problems?

According to the CNN.com article, "Longer daylight saving may cause trouble," "The pending changes to daylight-saving time has some technologists worried about software and gadgets that now compensate for daylight time based on a schedule unchanged since 1987." For example, many people have newer VCRs and DVD recorders that have built-in calendars that automatically adjust for daylight time. These users will have to override the automated functions on their recorders and switch to "manual" to ensure that their shows continue to record correctly.

Identity Theft RC

http://www.idtheftcenter.org/

Identity Theft Resource Center

ITRC a national nonprofit organization that focuses exclusively on identity theft. ITRC was founded in December 1999 by Linda and Jay Foley.

ITRC provides resources for consumers, to prevent identity theft or victims to restore their good name.

Tel: (858) 693-7935
Email: itrc@idtheftcenter.org

Some General Tips:

1. The next time you order checks have only your initials (instead of first name) and last name put on them. If someone takes your checkbook, they will not know if you sign your checks with just your initials or your first name, but your bank will know how you sign your checks.

2. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put "PHOTO ID REQUIRED".

3. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.

4. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks. You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have it printed, anyone can get it.

5. Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place. I also carry a photocopy of my passport when I travel either here or abroad. We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing a name, address, Social Security number, credit cards.

1. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.

2. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one).

But here's what is perhaps most important of all : (I never even thought to do this.)

3. Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.

Now, here are the numbers you always need to contact immediately if your wallet, etc., has been stolen:
1.) Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271
2.) Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
3.) Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742
4.) Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289
