Xanga blog mirror script

http://www.markwang.com/projects/xangamirror/

Mark Wang's Xanga blog mirror script

What is this? Why is it useful?

Xanga is the most popular blogging site out there used by millions, but its closed, proprietary hosted system, and lack of many features standard in other blog-management software as well as total ability to tinker with the source code and customize settings to one's heart's content has made it to be looked down upon amongst the "hard-core" bloggers.

Xanga is hard to ignore because of it's user community. In particular, I found that many of my friends only bothered to read other Xanga sites through its built-in aggregator, and rarely if ever read non-Xanga sites like mine hosted using Movable Type. So, for a while, I was manually mirroring my MT entries onto Xanga via cutting and pasting. However, being the lazy nerd I am, I decided to come up with something better.

Presenting the Xanga mirror script, written in Perl. It automates logging in and posting to Xanga, and is designed to be called from content-management software such as Movable Type. In all fairness, the idea isn't totally mine, although this implementation is. I first saw this technique on a friend of a friend's site, and was intrigued. However, he was apparently using some other CMS, and not MT, so I decided to implement my own solution.

The requirements are simple: MT or some other blog/content management software written in Perl, a host that you have access to, and some basic knowledge of editing text files on UNIX. Oh, and of course, a Xanga account, which you can freely sign up for if you don't have one already. The basic one will do -- no need for Premium.

Usage
Xanga.pm -- the Xanga posting script. Download this, edit the user setting variables in the file itself, and save it to somewhere in your Perl @INC path, probably PATH_TO_YOUR_BLOG_SOFTWARE/lib/. For Moveable Type using the default installation paths, it's the same directory that MT.pm is in.

When Mukhtar Mai was gang raped in Pakistan in February 2002, she lost her so-called "honour" and, along with it, her chance to lead a normal life in her village.

Many expected Ms Mai, 33, to commit suicide, as is all too common after rape in Pakistan.

But she refused and started what has become a three-year legal battle against her alleged rapists.

She now campaigns internationally for women's rights.

neighbour peered over the fence. Interested in what the cheeky-faced youngster was up to, he politely asked, "What are you doing, there, Nancy?"

"My goldfish died," replied Nancy tearfully without looking up, "and I've just buried him." The neighbour was very concerned. "That's an awfully big hole for a goldfish, isn't it?"

Nancy patted down the last heap of dirt then replied, "That's because
he's inside your fucking cat."

Chimpanzee's artwork auction

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/arts/4109664.stm

Three abstract paintings by a chimpanzee named Congo have been sold for £12,000 - after being given a price tag of just £800.

The animal art, painted when the chimp was three, went under the hammer on Tuesday at auction house Bonhams in central London.

Congo's work was included in a 1957 chimp art exhibition curated by animal behaviourist Desmond Morris.

The three works were bought by US modern art enthusiast Howard Hong.

Picasso is believed to have framed one of the chimp's works on his studio wall after he received it as a gift, while Miro was also said to have owned one.

Archive:

Brightly colored paintings by Congo the chimpanzee are going on sale at a prestigious London auction house alongside works by Andy Warhol and Renoir.

The collection of three tempera on paper paintings -- described as resembling abstract artworks -- are expected to fetch between $1,130 and $1,500 next month at Bonhams Modern and Contemporary sale.

Congo, born in 1954, produced some 400 drawings and paintings between the ages of 2 and 4.

He quickly learned how to handle a brush and pencils, instead of knocking them over or trying to eat them.

He painted within the boundaries of the sheet of paper, never allowing the paint to spill over the edge, and appeared to know when he had finished a painting -- by refusing to pick up his brush or pencil over the work.

Other links:
Piss Painting by Andy Warhol.

To create the works he put copper paint on canvas, placed them on the floor and invited his friends and colleagues to urinate on them.

Dated 1979, Bonham's gave it an estimate of between £35,000-£45,000.

Ahmadinejad vs Rafsanjani

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4105752.stm

The hardline mayor of Tehran is to face a veteran former president in a run-off for Iran's presidency, after a surprise result in Friday's first round.

The second round pits conservative Mahmoud Ahmadinejad against pragmatic cleric Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who led Iran for eight years until 1997.

My First Ballot

http://www.election1384.com/candidates.asp

Except for the vote I cast a couple of months ago, not as a US citizen but as a property owner, to increase my parcel tax by $8 so that my county, Alameda county of California, would have the budget to fight the spread of West Nile virus, today was the first day I was legally permitted to vote in an election. The irony is that, these days nobody wants to vote and everyone is talking about boycotting the elections, even my friends back home who voted passionately for Khatami have decided not to vote this time around.

When I heard last night that this year there would be polling stations in the Bay Area for the Iranian Presidential Elections, I got so excited that I drove a 100 miles roundtrip to my uncle's to pick up my Iranian passport. This morning, I woke up at 8:30 am, all enthusiastic to exercise my right as an Iranian citizen. On my way to the Emeryville polling station my mind wondered around many subjects, from the lyrics of the Shisho Hasht song "Bisto Haftom Ke Shod Hij Jaa Nemiram, Na Nemiram, Ra'y Nemidam, Ra'y Nemidam" to the threatening chain email I received yesterday quoting a secret service uncle of someone that there are plots by antirevolutionaries to blow up polling stations. From knowing that for many people it's no big deal to be voting at 32 when every 16 year old gets to vote, to when I will be able to vote in a US presidential election.

Well, finally I got to the Courtyard Hotel, turned right in to the parking lot, and there were no signs of an election in progress. No banners, no security guards, no black embassy limousines with bullet proof windows. Maybe it was all a big practical joke that my friends were playing on me, and there were no polling stations in the Bay Area after all. On second thought, what do I know about polling stations and how they should look like; I've never been to one before. I walked in the lobby and sheepishly asked the receptionist about any polling stations around. Pointing to the left, she told me to turn right, and then right again. Kind of confused, I walked towards the direction she had pointed to, and suddenly I saw the words "Mahal-e Akhz-e Ra'y" printed in large Farsi font. Relieved I followed the signs down a hallway. Passed a huge American security guard and then another. A third security guard standing next to a door told me to knock and walk in.

It was a large quiet room with two desks and a few chairs on the left and a table with cookies and candies on the right. A teenage girl was sitting to the left of the door, wearing a scarf, a dark skirt down to her knees and black silk stockings. Three women were sitting on the chairs, no chadors, just scarves. A clean shaved man in a gray suit with a mustache and a young woman neatly dressed were sitting behind the first desk. He asked for my passport, entered my information in his laptop. She took the print of my "Sab-baabe" finger, wrote down my name on a form and tore half of the sheet and gave it to me. I cleaned my finger with a WipeIt and took the 3'x5' piece of paper. The guy instructed me to write the first and last name of the candidate of my choice on the paper and that there should be no extra marks. Ok now, what was the first name of Dr. Moin, or Rafsanjani?!! He must have noticed my perplexed face, because he pointed to a board behind me which had the full name of all the seven candidates and a paragraph description of each.

While I was standing at the board, the people in the room started talking. They must have all been related to each other, or at least very close friends. The conversation was about the teenage girls little bird, "Agha Taghi", which kept fighting with the new bird she had just bought. Someone suggested she put a glass wall in the cage between the two so that they would see each other but could not fight.

After scanning through the candidate descriptions, and realizing that Rafsanjani's last name is really Bahremani and Larijani's first name is Ali Ardeshir and a few other interesting facts about the birth place and education of each candidate, I wrote down the first and last name of the candidate of my choice on the paper and walked towards the ballot box on the other desk at the end of the room. The woman sitting behind the desk asked me to fold the paper before dropping it in the box. It was done. I had cast my first ballot. Filled with joy I started walking towards the cookies and candies by the right wall when one of the ladies said: Don't forget your passport. Embarrassed, I went and got my passport and quickly walked out of the room. I had forgotten all about the cookies.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4094702.stm

Iran heads towards tight election

>>> Information on polling stations in the USA and Canada at the end <<<

Iran's presidential candidates are making a last ditch appeal to voters as campaigning entered its final 24 hours.

With half of the country's 67 million population under 25, all the candidates have been appealing to the youth vote.

Hardliners have called for Mohsen Rezaei, one of the four conservative candidates, to drop out to avoid splitting the vote.

"The more the people claim their rights and take part in making decisions over their future, the more the way will be paved for choosing a state which reflects the people's revolution," said outgoing President Mohamed Khatami on Iranian television.

Expert projections suggest most votes will be shared between Mr Rafsanjani, Mr Qalibaf and reformist Mostafa Moin, with no one polling the 50% needed to win in the first round.

A second round could be held on June 24th - the first run-off in the Islamic republic's history.

Bin Laden alive and well

Osama Bin Laden alive and well

Mullah Usmani, a top Taleban commander has said in a television interview that Osama Bin Laden and Afghanistan's former Taleban leader Mullah Omar are alive and well.

The comments come a day after Pakistan's President, Pervez Musharraf, said in Australia that he believed Osama Bin Laden was alive based on the information Pakistan had received from al-Qaeda members arrested by its security forces.

Pakistani observers are surprised at Geo TV's ability to interview a top Taleban commander at a time when members of the militia are targets of a massive manhunt by the US-led coalition as well as Pakistani forces.

Rafsanjani - BBC interview

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4097288.stm

Iran 'misled UN on nuclear work'

It's possible that at times, Iran has not reported its activities," Mr Rafsanjani told the BBC's Newsnight television programme.

The IAEA's report, due to be delivered on Thursday, says Iran has confirmed that it continued trying to make plutonium until 1998, having earlier told the agency such efforts had ended in 1993.

Tehran reportedly accepted later experiments had taken place in 1995 and 1998, after the IAEA confronted it with its analysis of its plutonium samples.

In his interview with the BBC, Mr Rafsanjani said the US had recently indicated it was willing to work with Iran.

He said the US had lifted obstacles to Tehran's entry into the World Trade Organization, had given consent to carry out limited nuclear enrichment and had agreed to sell it plane parts.

Mr Rafsanjani said Iranians who were dissatisfied with the political process in the country should be free to speak their minds.

"If they have reasonable points, we should accept them," he told the BBC. "If not, we should persuade them of our case."

Sean Penn in new role at Friday Prayers in Tehran

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Hollywood actor Sean Penn, adopting the role of a journalist, scribbled in his notebook as Friday prayer worshippers in Tehran chanted "Death to America."

Penn, 44, in Iran on a brief assignment for the San Francisco Chronicle ahead of presidential elections on June 17, may be one of the best known faces in film, but he went unrecognized by the 6,000 faithful at Tehran University.

The actor, who visited Iraq before and after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 and wrote an account of his second trip for the Chronicle, told Reuters he had decided to come to Iran because of growing tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Sharif University of Technology

http://www.sharif.edu/en/education/

SUT is one of the largest engineering schools in the Islamic Republic of Iran. It was established in 1966 under the name of Aryarmehr University of Technology and, at that time, there were 54 faculty members and a total of 412 students who were selected by national examination. In 1980, the university was renamed Sharif University of Technology. SUT now has a total of 300 full-time faculty members, approximately 430 part-time faculty members and a student body of about 8,000.

Originally, the 20 hectare university campus housed four departments; Electrical Eng., Metallurgical Eng., Mechanical Eng. and Chemistry. Since then, SUT has expanded its services until, today, it contains ten different departments in the fields of science and engineering which provide students with the opportunity to concentrate their studies in specific areas of expertise. All departments offer B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs.

AIAA bans Iranian Authors

http://www.suta.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=134

AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) bans publication by Iranian Authors

The following excerpt is from an email about an article printed on the website of SUTA (Sharif University of Technology Associations):

Another U.S. organization bans publication by Iranian authors

Dear University friends:

In our last announcement we informed you that AIAA has agreed to let authors from Iran participate in the conference in Toronto, but emphasized that their resolution passed on May 11, 2005 to ban publication of papers by Iranian authors will remain in effect.

SUTA started to publicize the AIAA policy that has already produced positive response results:

1-The Chronicle of Higher Education, and Science Magazine that helped us in publicizing IEEE/OFAC dispute agreed to report about it. The Chronicle has already published an article about it that you see here.

2- Radio Farda has asked Dr. Hojabri and AIAA President for an interview. The interview with Dr. Hojabri has been taped yesterday, but Radio Farda is waiting for the response of AIAA.

3-Iranian.com, an Iranian electronic newsletter reported also on Monday about AIAA policy:

4-Prof. Ken Foster who was also in IEEE dispute agreed to agreed to contact AIAA on our behalf. He has also warned us that another ruling about use of high tech equipment by those born in the embargoed countries is in coming.

5- National Iranian American Council has agreed to contact AIAA and warn them about legal consequences of their policy.

We have to use all our resources to end this policy ASAP.

American Society for Aerospace Science Halts Contacts With Researchers in Nations Under Embargo

By RICHARD MONASTERSKY

In a sharp contrast with other American academic organizations, the main professional society for aerospace engineers and scientists has decided to ban the publication of papers by authors in Iran and other countries subject to a United States trade embargo. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics will also forbid such scientists to attend the institute's conferences in the future.

In addition to Iran, the new policy applies to Cuba, North Korea, and Sudan. The institute has about 30,000 members, some 5,000 of them overseas. The only members in embargoed countries are in Iran, said Robert S. Dickman, the institute's executive director.

Iranian members were notified that they could not attend the institute's meeting in Toronto this week. But after receiving complaints that the members had already bought airplane tickets and booked hotel rooms, the institute last week waived the ban temporarily for the meeting.

The controversy follows a decision by the U.S. Treasury Department to clarify its rules about scientific exchanges with authors in embargoed countries. The department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, known as OFAC, ruled last December that scientific exchanges with such authors were permitted. The ruling reversed a 2003 decision that had placed restrictions on communications with those authors.

2000 year old palm seed

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4086348.stm

Date palm buds after 2,000 years

Israeli researchers say they have succeeded in growing a date palm from a 2,000-year-old seed.

The seed was one of several found during an excavation of the ancient mountain fortress of Masada.

Scientists working on the project believe it is the oldest seed ever germinated.

Researchers in Jerusalem have nicknamed the sapling Methuselah, after the biblical figure said to have lived for nearly 1,000 years.

Mosaffa, Mazaher, Ph.D.

Prof. Mazaher Mosaffa was born in 1932 in arak, Iran. He has been a faculty member at the universities of Shiraz and Tehran.

Below is an excerpt from an article printed in Iran newspaper:

Grandpa Gang

http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/06/10/germany.grandpas.ap/index.html

'Grandpa Gang' bank robbers jailed

HAGEN, Germany (AP) -- A German court on Friday convicted three aging men known as the "Grandpa Gang" of bank robbery and violating weapons laws and sentenced them to between nine and 12 years in prison.

Rudolf Richter, 74, Wilfried Ackermann 73, Lothar Ackermann, 64, robbed 14 German banks from 1988 to 2004, stealing more than euro1 million (US$1.23 million).

Wilfried Ackermann testified that the two older men met while in prison on separate bank robbery charges, and after their release began meeting with their 64-year-old acquaintance to discuss robbery plans.

He said the group were armed with handguns, some dating from World War II, automatic weapons, and sometimes with fake hand grenades.

Ackermann said fear of having no money and spending his old age in a nursing home drove him to commit the robberies.

Richter said he was driven to rob banks because he had already served time in prison for a bank robbery he said he did not commit.

World Cup Sex

Berlin prepares for World Cup sex

Berlin is expecting an influx of prostitutes during next year's World Cup and city health officials plan to distribute 100,000 free condoms.

The free condoms will be accompanied by leaflets giving men advice on how to behave with prostitutes.

The leaflets will set out 10 "rules" for prostitutes' clients, Ms Schmiedhofer, health director for Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district, told the BBC News website.

She ruled out Berlin introducing so-called "sex sheds" - special drive-in enclosures for prostitutes and their clients which have been pioneered in Cologne.

The German news magazine Stern says an area the size of a football pitch was earmarked for prostitution in Cologne's Longerich district in October 2001.

It was fenced off and photography was banned there. The enclosure was designed to stop illegal kerb-crawling in the city centre and according to Stern, it has been declared a success.

PROSTITUTION IN EU STATES

Netherlands: prostitutes treated as self-employed persons; street prostitution in managed zones; brothels legal but subject to licensing

Germany: similar rights for prostitutes to those of the Dutch though prostitution subject to VAT; legal brothels and recognised red light zones

France: prostitution legal - soliciting and procuring are not

Sweden: prostitution legal but buying sex is not, so clients risk prosecution

UK: prostitution not officially illegal but soliciting, procuring and brothel-keeping are

Pay Per Mile

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4075490.stm

Car charge trials 'in five years'

Pay-as-you go road charging could be trialled in England within five years, says Transport Secretary Alistair Darling.

Satellite tracking would be used with charges varying from 2p a mile on rural roads to £1.30 in congested areas.

Mr Darling said charging could replace road tax and fuel duty. It would leave half of motorists better off, he said.

The survey suggested 34% of respondents opposed the introduction of charges for driving on congested roads at peak times, compared with 47% who supported the measure.

Steven Joseph, director of the pressure group Transport 2000 backed road charging but called for the mileage rate for "gas guzzlers" to be twice or three times that levied on greener vehicles.

German road charging 'glitch free'

Germany already has a satellite tracking system in place. It was launched at the beginning of this year - 16 months later than planned and way over budget.

Trucks carry small black boxes in their cabins which communicate with infra-red sensors mounted on bridges that cross motorways.

A central database is then able to track their progress across the country, charging an average of 12.5 euro cents (8p) per kilometre.

Tehran, Iran
June 8th, 19:05
(7:35 am LA time)

Salaam Aalmaan
Good Morning Germany

"Khabar Khabar Dobaareh
Teeme Por Az Setaareh
Shaadi o Eftekhaaro
Be Armaghaan Miaareh"

Before the Match:

"Jame Jahanee Enshaalaah".
These were the words of Branko Ivankovic in Farsi in his interview during national team's practice session yesterday. And sweet victory made his wish come true.

Four years ago in Manama, Iran's qualification for the 2002 World Cup depended on a win when Bahrain's 3 to 1 victory resulted in Saudi Arabia qualifying instead. 60 million Iranians watched in despair and disgust as Bahrainian players made a victory lap waiving the flag of Saudi Arabia.

Tonight's game was just about one thing, receiving a single point and qualifying for the World Cup, but the extra joy of Iran's victory, wiped out the painful memories of Manama 2001 and along with it, the images of Bahrainian players falling down left and right, grass rolling, and killing time in any imaginable way.

The Match:

During the first two minutes of the match we got four corner kicks in a row and on the fourth one Nekounam passed the ball to Nosrati, whose header was reflected back off the right Bahrainian vertical pole.

45 minutes later, the first half finishing with no goals but 8 corners for Iran (vs 2 for Bahrain) was proof that although Bahrianians desperately needed the 3 points, the Iranian team was controlling the game.

At the beginning of the second half (min 48) Zandi's deep ball from a free kick and Nosrati's header which reflected off the ground and landed in goal, secured Iran's qualification to the 2006 World Cup.

In the second half we saw more attacks from Iran. After min 90, Bahrianians had a few attacks one of which was very dangerous but the ball went to out and Ferdosipour's comment "Nafase Raahati Meekeshim, va Kheyli Ham Raahate In Nafas" beautifully described how everyone in the stadium must have felt.

Iran received three yellow cards (Ferydoon Zandi, Sattar Zare, Mehdi Mahdavikia) and the Bahranians got two.

After the Match:

The fact that everyone in Iran and Iranians all around the world were making preparations for a victory party had put enormous pressure on the players, but the nervous team played a beautiful game and in front of an audience of 75000 men and 50 women, waving hundreds of red, white and green flags and shouting "Iran Chi Kaaresh Kardeh, Soorakh Soorakhesh Kardeh", the Iranian national soccer team made history and June 8th 2005 (18 Khordad 1384) became an unforgettable day for all soccer fans watching the game.

"Ey Iran" was broadcasted in the Stadium.

A huge Iranian flag carrying the words "Khalije Hamishe Farse Iran" covered several rows of expectators.

With so many national team members playing in Germany, it was like "roohe almaan dar iran damideh shodeh"

On the Side:

Many clubs (Farhangsaraas) in Iran had live viewings of the match to groups of youngsters in a sports club environment.

The first floor tickets were 2,000 tomans and the second floor tickets were 1,000 tomans each, though they were traded for up to 20,000 tomans in the black market.

Tonight's win which puts Iran at the top of group B means Iran will be seeded 3rd in it's World Cup group. That would increase our chances of going to round of 16 due to a weaker team being seeded 4th.

Group B:

On the same day, in the other game of the Germany World Cup 2006 qualifying group in Pyongyang, N. Korea played against Japan at 15:05 Tehran time, (3:35 am LA time). Japan received three points from this game with two goals.

After 4 games for each team, Iran stands at the top of Group B with 13 points, followed by Japan 12, Bahrain 4 and N. Korea 0 points each.

Iran's FIFA ranking is 18, behind Japan 17, but ahead of Denmark and Germany tied at 19 for May '05.

Iran's next match is on August 17th against Japan in Japan.

Haftegi in Stanford Daily

Podcasting: Journalism for the masses?

Mehdi Yahyanejad, a post-doctoral fellow specializing in bioinformatics at Stanford, typically spends Thursday evenings with a microphone and a laptop computer. He and Ahmad Anvari, an engineer in Silicon Valley, record a weekly Farsi language news program on American culture, politics and technology called "Haftegi" (which means "weekly" in Farsi) from their living rooms.

Thanks to podcasting, a way to publish sound files to the Internet, anyone with a computer can become an audio news commentator from his or her own home. The technology allows listeners in Iran - and anywhere else in the world - to download Yahyanegad and Anvari's show directly to their iPods (or any other MP3 player) and tune in.

Tabrik va Tasliat !

Tehran, Iran (19:05)
(7:35 am LA time)

An all defensive North Korean team had come to the field hoping for a draw, which gave the Iranian team many opportunities to attack, though not as many goals.

Despite more than 20 fouls ( 3/4 of which committed by the Koreans ) and 7 yellow cards (2 for Iran: Rezaei, and Kabi), it was quite a calm game compared to Iran's last match with N. Korea in Pyongyang.

The only goal of the match at the end of the first half (min 45+3) came from Mahdavikia's (no. 2) deep ball from a free kick from the right side that was headed back by Gol Mohammadi and a final header from Rahman Rezaei (no. 5) hit the underside of the crossbar and went in. Both Gol Mohammadi and Rezaei being defenders shows the magnitude of Iranian presence in Korea's penalty box.

In the second half, recently married Ali Daei, perhaps to impress his bride, played one of his best games in a while. The Korean goal keeper blocked several headers from Daei. Fans in the stadium were shouting "ALI DAEI" over and over again.

N. Korean head coach was given a red card during the last minutes of the second half and was sent to sit with the fans.

With this victory Iranian national soccer team only needs one more point to secure it's place as one of the two teams qualifying from Group B to go to 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany.

The Azadi stadium was only half full due to precautions taken after the fatal incident last month. Tickets were color coded (yellow, blue, green, and red) to match the seats and paths to the gates were marked with matching colors to reduce the risk of any injuries.

Another highlight of the game was Mr. Shafeei, whose memorable quotations always bring additional joy to the games. "Sar Morabiye Besyaar Nime Asabiye Teame Kore", "Maze Maze Mikone Bezane, Nazane, va Nemizane", "Baaziye Japon Bahrain Har Natijei Daashte Baashe Baraaye Maa Kheyli Moheme". He also mentioned that today was the 26th anniversary of A. Khomeyni's ertehaal.

This was Iran's 18th game against N. Korea, we have 13 wins and 5 draws.

In the other game of the group in Manama, Bahrain, Japan's only goal secured them a victory against Bahrain.

After 4 games for each team, Iran stands at the top of Group B with 10 points, followed by Japan 9, Bahrain 4 and N. Korea 0 points each.

Iran's FIFA ranking is 18, behind Japan 17, but ahead of Denmark and Germany tied at 19 for May '05.

Iran's next match is on June 8th against Bahrain in Tehran at 19:05 (7:35 am LA time)

Wedding on top of Mount Everest

A Nepalese couple have exchanged wedding vows on top of Mount Everest, the first people ever to marry there.

Moni Mule Pati and Pem Dorjee Sherpa briefly took off their oxygen masks and put on plastic garlands, while the groom symbolically applied red powder on the bride's forehead.

On Monday, 45 climbers scaled the 8,850-metre (29,035-feet) peak - including Pem Dorjee and Moni Mulepati.

Nepalese Appa Sherpa broke his own world record by climbing it for the 15th time while two Iranian climbers became the first Muslim women on top of the peak.

Proposal for porn domain rejected

The proposal for the .xxx domain was voted out by the overseer of the net's addressing system, seven years after the ideas was first put forward.

It was rejected by nine votes to five. Paul Twomey, Icann's chief executive abstained from the vote.

Board members said they were concerned that approval would put the agency into the position of a content regulator.

The idea of creating a net domain for pornography was first floated in 2001 and was given approval in June 2005 by Icann which oversees the net's addressing system.

Final approval was scheduled to take place in December 2005 but this was delayed until May 2006 when the proposal was abruptly dropped over worries about how sites signing up to use .xxx would be policed.

Sex sites get dedicated net home

Pornographic websites are about to get their own online home.

A proposal to create net domains ending .xxx has been approved by the body that oversees the net's addressing system.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) said it would begin negotiations with ICM Registry, run by British businessman Stuart Lawley, to iron out technical issues and prices for the new web addresses.

Adult-oriented sites, a $US12 billion ($A16 billion) industry, probably could begin buying "xxx" addresses as early as fall or winter depending on ICM's plans, ICANN spokesman Kieran Baker said. The new pornography suffix was among 10 under consideration by the regulatory group, which also recently approved addresses ending in "jobs" and "travel."

The $US60 price is roughly ten times higher than prices other companies charge for dot-com names.

In 2000 Icann approved seven new domains (.aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name, .pro) but the net's original generic domains (.com, .edu, .gov, .int, .mil, .net, and .org) and country namges such as .uk are still the most popular.

The latest domains are .xxx, .jobs, .travel, .cat, .post, and .mobi .

Icann is still pondering the approval of .asia, .mail, and .tel .
